WHY HAST THOU ACCEPTED ME?

This post was inspired by the song, Mystery of Mercy, by the band, Caedmon’s Call.  In that song, the artist puts himself in the shoes of various people whom Jesus interacted with during his ministry.

Instead of echoing Jesus’ question, “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?” the song asks another question, “My God, My God, why hast thou accepted me?”

This inspired me to read the four gospel accounts and start a “characters” list of my own.

My God, My God, Why Hast Thou Accepted Me?

  • I am the man prepared to stone the adulterous woman.
  • I am the adulterer ashamed and naked before the crowd.
  • I am slave that was forgiven much, but would not forgive a little.
  • I am the lawyer seeking for a sign.
  • I am the tax collecting traitor.

My God, My God, why hast thou accepted me?

  • I am the poor man dying at the gates of a mansion.
  • I am the man in the mansion, smug with sharing only crumbs.
  • I am the Pharisee blowing my trumpet on the corner.
  • I am the child whose parents killed the prophets
  • I am the healed leper that forgot to say thanks.

My God, My God, why hast thou accepted me?

  • I am the wild son who squandered his wealth with harlots.
  • I am the harlot weeping at your feet.
  • I am the hypocrite with a plank in his eye trying to remove my brother’s speck.
  • I am the disciple who pushed aside the children.
  • I am the guest who chose the best seat at the banquet.

My God, My God, why hast thou accepted me?

  • I am the beaten man left for dead in the gutter.
  • I am the priest that passed by on the other side of the road.
  • I am the merchant robbing your people in the temple.
  • I am the fisherman who denied you three times.
  • I am the guilty criminal asking to be remembered.

I have often been challenged by feeling like I am the man in the mansion, smug with sharing only crumbs. Thanks for the challenge and reminder that he who has been forgiven much, loves much and how we have been accepted!

Very powerful. It’s going to take some time to sift through it, but there’s lots there for meditation. Thank you.
