INTERVIEW #23 – YINN (27, MALAYSIA)

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: A FORMER BUDDHIST FROM MALAYSIA

1.  What is your religious background?
I grown up practicing Buddhism.  I and my family go to Chinese temples once in a while.  Not very often.

2.  Do you currently practice a religious faith? If not, why?
Not really.  I believe I should be a good person, try to be as good as I can be.  I believe in God, but not religion.

3.  What comes to mind when you think about God?
I believe God exist.  He is so powerful He can completely control human’s life, luck and everything.  That’s why we pray when we feel helpless, right?

4.  What comes to mind when you think about Satan?
I think Satan is a noun for sin.  I think Satan does not exist until yourself decided to create that in your mind.

5.  What comes to mind when you think about Heaven?
Heaven in my mind is a happy land.  People who gets to go there will live happily forever and pretty much can do whatever you love in a healthy condition forever.  [If] the people like to farm and plant, they do get to have enough space to farm and plant their own food, without needing to pay water bill and property tax.

6.  What comes to mind when you think about Hell?
I believe Hell exist too.  People [who] did something unforgivable, such as murdering [the] innocent, will stay in Hell with flame burning forever.  I hope the spirit in Hell get a chance to leave there, but I am not sure.

7.  What comes to mind when you think about the Bible?
I do not know much about Bible.  It’s a good thing to read.  It teaches us what to do and what not to do.  A great moral lesson book.

8.  What comes to mind when you think about Jesus?
Jesus is the messanger who bring God’s message to this world, and end up sacrificing.

9.  What comes to mind when you think about the purpose of life?
I have been thinking about this question too.  Sometimes I think that God make humans just for joy, just like we like to have pets or kids.  So there is really no purpose of life.  Just live happy and enjoy happening.

10.  On a scale of 0 to 10 (0 being no confidence, and 10 being complete confidence), how would you rate the level of confidence you have that your beliefs (regarding questions 3-9) are accurate?
I am going to scale myself 7.

11.  What would you say have been the biggest obstacles in your search for truth?
The biggest obstacles for me is probably because I do not care to search for the “truth”.  What is the truth?  Who can say what they know is the “truth”?  I do not need others to tell me what they thought because I do not care what they think.

12.  Hypothetically, if all your questions had answers that pointed to God as the Creator and Jesus as the Savior, what would you do about it?
Nothing.  What can I do about it?

13.  Is there anything you’re afraid you would have to change or give up if you were to become a Christian?
No.  I just do not think I need to have a religion and listen to what others have to say, which to me, is brainwashing.

14.  Hypothetically, if you were to stand before God today, how would you feel about meeting Him?
Not ready, not prepared, insecure, because I know I am not a prefect person.

15.  Hypothetically, on what basis do you believe God will or will not accept you into Heaven?
God will probably not accept me into Heaven, because I have done bad things before.  Like I said, I am not a perfect human.

16.  If you could ask God one question, what would it be?
“What’s the Powerball winner numbers?”  Because if I am going to Hell, I might as well enjoy this short life in this earth.

17.  If you could ask 1,000 people who are not Christians one question, what would it be?
I do not ask question, because I really do not care about their answer all that much.

18.  If you could ask 1,000 Christians one question, what would it be?
“Does being a Christian really stop you from doing bad thing?”  Because I know a person who is suppose to be high up guy in a church.  He can lie, and make up story about others, so I think a person can educate himself/herself to be a good moral person better than a religion could.

19.  Would you be interested in participating in an Investigative Faith Study with someone at your convenience?
No thanks.
