TOP 32 QUOTES FROM THE CATALYST LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

On May 1-3, I had the chance to attend Catalyst for the second time.  Catalyst is a fantastic conference with fantastic speakers geared toward “next generation leaders.”

Meeting Craig Groeschel

Aside from a backpack full of free books, I came home with a notebook full of ideas.  Here are some of my favorite quotes from the speakers I was able to hear:

Craig Groeschel
1.  “Don’t build your ministry on what you’re against.  Build your ministry on what you’re for.”
2.  “We’re not here to make a name. We’re here to make a difference.”
3.  “Don’t worry when you face resistance.  Worry when you don’t.”
4. “If you blame yourself for the declines, you’ll take credit for the increases.”
5. “If you’re not ready to face opposition in being used by God, you’re not ready to be used by God.”

CONFIDENT FAITH, BY MARK MITTELBERG (A BOOK REVIEW)

“This may well be the most important book you read this year!” ~Lee Strobel

Strobel’s endorsement is no exaggeration regarding the new book, Confident Faith: Building a Firm Foundation for Your Beliefs, by Mark Mittelberg.  Originally released in 2008 under the title, Choosing Your Faith (the title of which I actually like better), this edition is a major revision and definitely worth reading.

Confident Faith is an excellent resource that offers insight to people who are Christians and people who are not.  I love Mittelberg’s methodology.  He starts by establishing what faith really is and how each one of us actually exercises faith in something every day.

3 LITTLE BOOKS EVERY COLLEGE STUDENT SHOULD READ

As one who has been doing ministry among college-age people for more than ten years, I’m always on the lookout for new resources.  That’s why I was thrilled to discover the Coffee House Chronicles, coauthored by Josh McDowell and Dave Sterrett.

These three small books are specifically geared toward those in, or about to go into, college.  What’s unique about them is that they are written in a dialogue format as a story.  While each book can be read as a stand-alone, they follow a set of characters made up of college students and professors.

UNCONDITIONAL, A MUST-SEE MOVIE

Last night, my wife and I rented a movie from Red Box called Unconditional.

Wow!  It. Was. Fan. Tastic.

Have you ever been so moved by a story that you wanted to share it with others, but instead of trying to explain the reasons why, you just said, “Trust me”?

That’s what I’m doing here.

Don’t waste money renting this movie.  Buy it.  Buy a copy for a friend while you’re at it.  As soon as you’re done watching it, you’ll want to watch it again.

Trust me.

FINDING JESUS IN THE MESS OF ORGANIZED RELIGION

Dan Kimball is on my list of top ten favorite authors, among the likes of Randy Alcorn, Andy Stanley, Lee Strobel and Craig Groeschel.

I had the privilege of hearing Dan speak shortly after the release of his book, They Like Jesus But Not The Church.  Aside from speaking and writing, Dan is a Bible teacher on staff with Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz, CA.

About The Book
Adventures In Churchland; Finding Jesus In the Mess of Organized Religion, is divided into three parts.

  • Part 1 is an introduction to the strange and unusual world of Churchland.
  • Part 2 addresses two areas of tension: judgmentalism and organized religion.
  • Part 3 explores ways we can become the church Jesus envisioned.

NEW YEAR’S EVE CONCERT WITH MARTY GOETZ

“Have you ever heard of Marty Goetz?”

My wife, Jennifer, asked me that question when we were dating four years ago.  When I told her that I had never heard of Marty, her face lit up with excitement because she couldn’t wait to introduce his music to me.

Jennifer had me sit down in her parent’s living room to watch an old DVD of Marty in concert.  I think I kind of poked fun of the music after listening to the first song.  After all, a piano player with a mullet didn’t really fit the mold of my favorite bands like David Crowder, Toby Mac, Switchfoot and Gungor.
