INSIDE THE MIND OF A CHURCH-RAISED, BORDERLINE ATHEIST IN COLLEGE

INTERVIEW #40: JONATHAN (19, NEWARK, DE)

1.  What is your religious background?
I was raised in the church, so I’ve been to church for a good part of my life with various [Christian] denominations.

2.  Do you currently practice a religious faith?
I don’t practice any religion actively. I have nothing against religion but I dislike a lot of what religions do to people. I feel like it’s a way of closing my mind off…by saying there’s only one religion I believe in or only one God. So because of that, I don’t subscribe to any religion. I lean toward atheism, but I’m not completely against God.

I’m a Muslim.  I was born in Karachi, Pakistan.  We migrated in 1947.  The subcontinent of India separated into two countries.  India and Pakistan.  So my parents were from what is now India.  They were in one of the richest states in the whole Indian subcontinent.  Pakistan formed on the basis of being a place where they can practice their own religion.  So my father decided to move.

None.  My mom was raised Catholic.  My dad was raised Baptist until he was about ten, but he didn’t really like it.  He wanted to go fishing on Sunday.  He rebelled when he was ten or twelve, or something like that.  We never attended church except for weddings and funerals.  I went to Catholic church once with my mom.  I have a vague recollection.  I was six or seven.

1.  What is your religious background?
I was baptized Catholic when I was a baby, and then for a while we went to this Catholic church, [but] when I was like eight or so we started going to this Methodist church.  That’s what I’ve been going to since I move [to college].
My dad was Catholic.  That’s why we were Catholic at first.  But then we weren’t.  {laugh}  I don’t talk to my dad, so that’s why we don’t go to the Catholic church anymore.  But my mom plays piano for the church we go to down state, but she’s not really…I don’t know…I wouldn’t say that she’s really religious, but she goes to church every Sunday.
