THE CUT OFF PRINCIPLE (Part 1, Lesson 9 of 12 from #TheJesusSeries)

READ: Matthew 5:27-30; Mark 9:43-48

What are the most valuable truths you believe a person needs to learn from this passage?

Tyler Ellis

  • In this short and simple passage, Jesus gives us a profound teaching to live by.  It is the principle of cutting off whatever “causes” us to sin.
  • When Jesus talks about cutting off hands and feet and gouging out eyes, he is not speaking in literal terms.  As Randy Alcorn says, “A blind man can still lust and a man without a hand can still steal.  But the eye is a means of access for both godly and ungodly input.  And the hand is a means of performing righteous or sinful acts.  We must therefore govern what the eye looks at and the hand does.” Continue Reading…

INTERVIEW #34 – ED (36, PITTSBURGH, PA)

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS: AGNOSTIC PHYSICS PROFESSOR

.
1.  What is your religious background?
None.  My mom was raised Catholic.  My dad was raised Baptist until he was about ten, but he didn’t really like it.  He wanted to go fishing on Sunday.  He rebelled when he was ten or twelve, or something like that.  We never attended church except for weddings and funerals.  I went to Catholic church once with my mom.  I have a vague recollection.  I was six or seven.

INSIDE THE HEART OF A PRO-LIFE ACTIVIST

An Interview with Bud Shaver

TYLER: What is it that you do?

BUD: In the past five years, I’ve lived out my faith in the public square to restore justice to the oppressed and minister to people who have nowhere else to turn but to God.  I’ve toured the country, visiting over 180 colleges and high schools.  Currently, I’m out on the street 4-5 days a week at abortion clinics in Albuquerque, NM.  I’m an activist…a pro-life activist.

JESUS & THE SAMARITAN WOMAN (Part 1, Lesson 7 of 12 from #TheJesusSeries)

INTRODUCTION TO THE JESUS SERIES:
The Jesus Series is a 12 lesson curriculum project based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.  For the next few months, I’ll be posting notes on my blog for each lesson.  These notes are a compilation of insights and ideas from a handful of Campus Ministers across the country who are partnering in this project.  They have committed to join me in sharing personal experiences, struggles, observations, questions, and recommended resources and experiments for life application.
The 12 passages that I’ve selected will cover a broad range of topics, including faith, grace, legalism, salvation, discipleship, money and possessions, temptation, doubt, heaven and hell, compassion, and unity.

READ: John 4:1-42

What principles can we glean from this passage that apply to the process of finding faith and sharing faith?
Tyler Ellis

  • Jesus seemed to treat every place he went like a mission field.  This was a lifestyle.  It didn’t matter if he was on a boat, under a tree, at a wedding, on a hillside, in the temple, at someone’s house for dinner, or even at a well in Samaria.  He was determined to live, eat, and breathe the good news that all people needed.
